II “Save it yourself or be without it”.6There was once a farmer living in Lower Grange who used to go to the market in Limerick every Saturday.
One day when he was near the City he heard a thrush singing on a tree quite near him.
He listened to the thrush for a short time and he made out that the thrush was singing “Spend and God will send”.Perhaps the wish was father of the thought as he was well known for spending all the money he could lay his hands on drink.
When he arrived in Limerick he went into the first public house he saw and spent all his money in obedience to the thrushes’ order.Late that evening when returning home, he again saw the thrush on the same tree but this time a wiser and sadder man translated his song thus
“Save it yourself or be without it”.This is said about a man who drinks his share, or who is compelled(continues on next page)- Informant
