- St. Stephen’s Day.
It is an old custom of the people of this parish to go around from house to house looking for money from other people. They dress up in very old clothes. They go around singing songs and this is one of the songs
The Wren the Wren the king of all birds
St Stephens Day she was caught in the furze
Although she was little her family was great
Rise up young lady and give us our tree
We followed this Wren three miles and more from Carrick on Lois to Cappamore
We broke her back and bended her knee
And we brought her home on a holly tree
Holly and ivy we’ll set up
The man of the house is very good luck
A box of money and a pint of beer
And I wish you all a happy new year
Up with the kettle and down with the pan
Give us our answer and let us be on
