- About 120 years ago Ellen Handley came to live with her uncle, Michael O Connor, in a little house in Yellow Town in lands of upper Ballycahane. Some people assert that it was situated opposite the old Barrack in the lands now occupied by Mr. Mc Namara. There lived in Ballycahane castle at that time people by the name of Scanlans. Mr Scanlan was a yeoman, and his son was a naval officer who had spent many years away from home. While on a visit to his father's residence he saw Ellen and being struck by her beauty he got her to elope with him.Her uncle who was a cobbler kept his little store of money in a little box and it is said that Scanlan tempted her to steal it. She yielded to his temptation. Scanlan promised to marry her, but it was only a sham marriage, the priest being only an ordinary man in disguise. They then boarded a boat(continues on next page)
