    The first cock of hay drives the corncrake away is a popular saying.
    If a farmer hasn't his crops sowed before the cuckoo sings, he is regarded as late with his work and is counted a bad farmer. The cuckoo is supposed to be here on 25th April.
    "In April come she will,
    In May she swigs all day,
    In June she alters her tune.
    In July she prepares to fly.
    In August go she must."
    The swallow and cuckoo leave in August. The swallows may be seen gathered in groups on the telegraph wires, chatting and preparing for their journey over sea.
    The wren is hunted on St Stephen's Day but in this locality only the small school boys go out. The wren builds in a blackthorn bush.
