The rushes are pulled a few days previously, dried, peeled, and dipped in melted fat, and then kept for the Twelfth Night.
The oil or grease that remains is put away carefully and is supposed to be a cure for sores, on cattle, or pigs or horses.
This is done in the West of Ireland, and has always been done in my own home in Co. Sligo. In this district the practice is unknown.Collected from,
