- In olden times all the marriages used to take place in Shrove. Land, money, or cattle used to be given as dowries. The marriages used to take place late in the evenings. Before the marriage there used to be a big party in the girl's house. The bride used to drive home behind her husband usually in a side-car or on horseback. In later years they drove in a carriage and pair.
They were followed by a procession of cars and men on horse-back. There used to be a great wedding that night in the man's house. Rows of tables were set along at each side of the kitchen. For the supper, they had bacon, mutton, beef, boiled geese and potatoes. The priests and big people used to attend the weddings and they used to(continues on next page)- Collector
