Local Marriage Customs (ar lean)
“It is very seldom that people get married on the last three days of the week because...”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)best day of all, Thursday (the) for crosses, Friday for losses, but Saturday the unluckiest of all. It is also said that if you marry in May you will not see much luck.
In olden times when there was no money, stocks and goods were given as a dowry. It was an old custom to have the marriage feast held in the house of the bride.
There is a big cake got and this is called the bride's cake. All the friend's present usually receives a big slice of this cake. This they put under their head in the night and they expect to dream of their future bride or bride-groom.
Straw boys used to go to the house of the bride and sing and dance. Then the bride gives them money and they go away. These boys used to be dressed very funny. They used to wear an old hat with a feather in it, and a big old ragged coat. They used to wear a masque over their face. In the morning when all the fun is over the bride and bride-groom usually go on their honeymoon. Some times they go to Dublin and often to England.- Bailitheoir
