- (continued from previous page)The only old church that I heard tell of was situated in the middle of a graveyard and it is called Tomplahollow. It was originally owned by the monks. Its destruction was ordered by one of the Williamite generals on their march to Limerick. That gallant Patrick Sarsfield put a hault to his gallop and several others of his crew besides. Quite near this old church another church stood in Tomplahollow also. It was situated in the middle of the Shannon and it was called the Friar's Island. This old church was removed stone by stone by the Board of Works and it now stands in the chapel-yard in Killaloe. It is identically the same as it was in the island. St. Patrick often visited this island on horseback. Before the church was removed there was High-Mass celebrated in it and it was attended by thousands of people. Now alas that beautiful island is now submerged owing to the Shannon Scheme.
The Shannon Scheme was alright in some respects but in other respects it done a terrible amount of harm. It threw all the fishermen out of employment. Those men were paid fifty shillings per week from the 1st of February to the 31st of October and their bonus were often five pounds each.
