This great flood necessitated the building of the magnificant new bridge, which spans the river at Newport, at the present time. However it had one redeeming feature, the land which was overrun by the flood was rendered more fertile and productive, as parts of Egypt are improved by the waters of the Nile, when that mighty river overflows the banks every year.
It was the general opinion that the one advantage which was gained by this unexpected deluge was but poor compensation for the great loss of property and the many other disasters which followed in its train.- Collector
