- Of the many local beliefs about the weather which still exist, and are made use of, especially in mountainous districts, I shall give a list. The most of them are unerring indications of good or bad weather, and the observation of some of them has proved to me, time and again, to be even more reliable than the up-to-date and scientific means of observing atmospheric conditions, with a view to giving an accurate forecast.
When the sun rises or sinks with a pale watery appearance, or when it rises brilliantly, too early in the morning, bad weather may be expected. When it sinks very red in the Summer, dry, windy, or more likely, stormy weather is certain, and in Winter and Spring it is a sign of immediate frost.
