- We are told that there is gold hidden beneath the surface of the earth in Mount Phillips, which is situated one mile and a half south west of the village of Newport. Tradition tells us that it was Cromwell shot one of his men, turned him into the form of an animal, and left him to keep watch over the treasure.
A certain man in the townsland of Clonsingle dreamed that the gold was hidden under a white thorn bush in a certain field in Mount Phillips. Having dreamt of this, three nights in succession, he and his wife and a couple of others determined to set out and dig for the hidden treasure.
