- (continued from previous page)in Newport as Parish Priest in November 1875. Fr Meagher was a native of Cashel. Before his transfer to Newport he had held the pastoral charge of Ballybricken, Co. Limk. While there, he had erected the present nice little church of Bohermore and also improved the present church of Ballybricken and added to it the belfry.
Up to Father Meagher's arrival in Newport, there was no church property in the way of parochial residence for the clergy. The priests resided in lodgings, at various places, and Fr. Meagher took up residence in Mr. Con Coffey's house in the village.
Shortly after his arrival Mr Fitzgerald of Clonbealy put up his house and farm for sale, and Fr. Meagher bought it on behalf of the parish. This sale secured for the parish of Newport one of the finest Parish Priest's residence in the arch-diocese. With it, went a good farm, of about twenty acres, and an isolated field of about one acre at the back of the houses in Cork Road. Fr. Meagher paid off some of the purchase money, leaving the remainder as a parochial debt, which was cleared off by his successor.- Collector
