Towards the close of 1829, all this was changed. O'Connell and the priests were continually speaking and preaching from altar and platform and at last succeeded in uniting the contending factions. Monster meetings and marchings were organised. One of their great marchings, was that of the Reaskawallahs from their head-quarter near Doon to the headquarters of the Coffeys of Newport. They marched six deep, in military order, with music and banners, every man carrying as an emblem of peace, a green bough; the procession was nearly two miles long. On its arrival at Newport the meeting was celebrated with much joy and whisky and in the presence of the priests a treaty of perpetual peace was established, and never from that day did these factions meet again for battle.- Collector
