- Mass-paths are so called because people used them when going to mass. Those paths have been used for generations and they are as beaten as the roads.
In olden days when there was no means of travelling except by foot people used take the shortest route to mass, and chose paths were regarded as something sacred.
Nobody would think it right to build a house on those paths or to use it for any other purpose.- Collector
