    The entrance to the cave was visible up to a few years ago when it was closed by Mr Dwyer former owner of the farm. They turned the shoes backwards on their horse's feet and often trapped pursuing soldiers. One night they held up a coach near Rathdowney they were about to turn home when they encountered a band of soldiers and police. There was a sharp exchange of shots and the robbers plunged through the bog. One of the police started in pursuit. They ran stealthy towards Derryville when they were a quarter of a mile from the cave Carroll Phelan fell and hurt his foot. Grant saw this and dropped a purse of gold hoping that the police man would stop and pick and, it up and thus give his friend a chance of escape. The police man saw the purse but did not pick it up.
