- In olden times it was a custom with the people to wake the corpse on the table. There was an old man dead one time. The men that shaved him and laid him out, put a rope around his body. All the neighbours gathered in that night to say a prayer over the corpse. When some were talking and more praying, one of the lads got at the end of the table and pulled the rope. The dead man sat up on the table. All the men and women took for the door, and the men ran home without their hats, and the women without their shawls.
