- In the years after the potato famine a good many of the Irish people were badly odd and in many cases they were not able to feed the children. As for instance on Monday when a child would be returning from school in the evening he would go to a well to do neighbour house who may have no children and there he would get his supper be kept for the night, and get his breakfast the following morning, also a piece of bread for his lunch that day in school. On Tuesday evening he would go to another well to do neighbours house and be treated in the same way and so on for the week. In that way he was called the poor scholar.
