Holy Wells
“Just one field away from this site is a field known as 'Tigh an tSagairt'.”
In the district is the Holy Well, known locally as "The Holy Well of Shanbally". Recently it has been called "St. Malachi's Well" but from an old woman (aged 82 yrs.) I got the old name "Tobar Urnaí Céasta". The "Tobar" and "Céasta" are quite definite but the middle word is very difficult to obtain as being without teeth she pronounces it peculiarly - sometimes "vulla" nó "ola". It would appear to be the correct name as in former years the pilgrimage to this Well was on Good Friday and was continued on Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. The Well is situated in "Shanbally Demesne" owned by the Ladies Constance Butler and Pole Carew. The actual Well is not marked on any of the O.S. Maps even the oldest ones in the possession of the Estate Agent but within about one hundred yards of it, a Church is marked + on O.S. maps 87. This was the old Church of Shanrahan in which Rev. Fr. W. Sheehy ministered and prior to him a Father Keating.
The outline of the enclosure (probably) is distinctly visible - an eminence rectangular in shape, and about 85 yds by 35 yds(continues on next page)- Informant
