    Beneath the shadow of the Galtees
    Stands an abbey in ruins old
    Like many in our island
    Sad tales of it are told
    How oft beneath its altars rose
    The holy word of God
    And often on its sacred floor
    The holy brothers trod

    There the day was spent in teaching
    Spredding knowledge through the land
    There the widow and the orphan
    Were fed with generous hand
    Its fame was known o'er mead and plain
    And by the rippling rills
    In cottage and in mansion, too
    Along the Galty Hills

    For centuries the holy monks
    In heavenly peace did dwell
    At last, there came a day of woe
    For them a tale to tell
    When Sidney, that man of evil deeds
    Whose crimes were nothing less
    Than those of his mistress,
    Oft called the Good Queen Bess
