- Lord Clanwilliam:
His horses were shod with silver. Sadly Gatha of Ballygriffin did his work but used keep some of the silver + coin with it. He was caught but Sir John who came to Lisheen at this time brought him out of it. - The Slogging and Hanging of Sir John the Flogger
Sir John was High Sheriff of the county and hanged + flogged without mercy. There are many stories of the hangings and floggings.
His hanging tree was a Spanish Chestnut near Lisheen house. green leaves never grew on it + when cut down (or knocked with the wind?) it is said that it could not be burned - Hanging of School Boy:-
A woman that lived near by had a son who would not go to school. She complained him to Sir John.
"Send him to me and you will have no further trouble with him" said Sir John.
She did so + when she went for him in the evening he was hanging from the chestnut a corpse.
