- (continued from previous page)passage blocked by the tide. He decided to wait until the tide ebbed when lo! the waters receded and he was able to cross immediately with the cattle. Having reached Carnacalla (parish of Kilrush) on the opposite shore in consequence of this manifestation from God he prostrated himself and vowed to consecrate his life to Him. Senan accordingly almost immediately placed himself under the guidance of a Cork monk named Castidian, who, at that time resided some place between the Ferry and Loop Head.
St Senan visited many places throughout Ireland such as Milmanagh (Church of the Monks) in Ossory; Enniscorthy County Wexford and many other places where Churches were founded and dedicated to him. He also visited Rome to see the reigning Pope at the time and to receive his blessing. He finally returned to his native Country (Ireland) and having established a monastery near Cork City returned to his native Clare.
He began his work of conversion in the islands of the Fergus crossed to Mutton Island thence to Bishop's Island off the Kilkee coast and finally established himself in Scattery Island (Inis Cathaigh) to which place he was miraculously transported. The Island was to St Senan's entry rendered uninhabitable owing to the presence of a Serpent or Monster (Catach - from which the Island derives its Irish name viz Inis Cathaigh)(continues on next page)
