- The ruling Irish family of the district were the McMahons, from whom the parish - Kilmurry McMahon - derives its name. The McMahons were rulers of Corca Baiscinn, which almost coincided with present baronies of Clonderlaw and Moyarta. The district of Corca Baiscinn was divided about 1588 into East and West Corca Baiscinn. The rulers of East Corca Baiscinn had their castle at Clonderlaw, in this parish, near the head of Clonderlaw Bay, an inlet of the Shannon.
