- Clarecastle, which is generally known as Clare, is situated in the County of Clare, in the Barony of The Islands. The names were to the Irish Countries under the reign of King John, and the Banner County Clare derived its name from Lord Clarence, of the British Nobility.There are many places in this vicinity which are connected with past ages and some names derived from certain incidents which occured there. The first of interest is Creagán na Cille and this derived its name from the fact that the old Catholic Church was situated there. The ruins are still to be seen beside the rocky crag, hence the name. A short distance outside the village, there is a place known as "The Priest Style".
