- There was a hedge-school in the townland of Carrichatee. This hedge-school existed in the seventeenth century. The teacher's name was John Conlan who lived in Tossy. The master used to sit on a stone and the children would sit around him. Any people who had children at school they used to go to the house the master would be lodging in at night.
Every child would give the master two pence every week. The master stayed in an old house in the field he was teaching in. The children used to write on slates and(continues on next page)
