The old people say that when St. James first came to Cooley a great disease was raging in the district, but as soon as St. James came the disease began to die out, and all the people got well again.
It is customary also to take home a bottle of the well water, and whenever there is lightning the water is sprinkled. It is supposed to be a great protection against the dangers of the lightning.
