- A mile from Warrenpoint, on the brink of the river Clanrye stands the old castle of Narrow-Water built on the Rock of the Fort. It was built by the Normans who came to Ireland after their conquest of Britain. It is one of the most beautiful places in the Carlingford Lough District. In 1640-41 Narrow-Water was garrisoned by a warden and troops from Newry. At this time Clan MacGuinness lay further north on the tribelands of Iveagh the brave chief Conn being in supreme command. All winter a wandering harper had stayed with the clan charming the warriors with the strains of his magic touch drew forth from the wild harp-strings. The harper and Lassana, daughter of The MacGuinness fell in love and planned to elope. Together they journeyed to Nun's Isle, intending to go from there to Ochter's Isle.At dusk that evening they reached Clanrye opposite to Shane O'Neills Castle, Fathom, and taking a skiff they drifted down the river hoping to pass(continues on next page)
