- There was a disaster a few miles outside Dundalk in the year 1838. A ship named "Mary Stoddard" got into difficulties during a storm in Dundalk Bay. A man named Captain Kelly saw the distress signals and he and six other men namely Gerald Hughes, James Murphy, James Crosby and John Lamb Patrick Callum [?] and Thomas Mc Ardle went out in a small boat to rescue the sailors on board but the first four were drowned and the last three washed ashore exausted.
