2. Hedge-Schools

   My father remembers to hear his father saying that there was a hedge school in James Matthews's field in Tully. The field is alongside a by-road and only a few yards from the owner's house. He does not know who taught there.

   There was also one in George Gartlan's field in Lannet. The teacher's name was Rooney.

   The hedge school was in Joe Kelly's field along the Tallanstown road. My grandfather went to school in it and was a fairly good scholar. My father forgot the master's name that was teaching there. For payment they gave the teacher a few shillings and some bread every week.
