Told by, Richard Kierans. - Candles were made in every house long ago. They were called "tallow-candles." An oval-shaped pot, not more than six inches high, with three little legs under it and a handle on it, was used to melt the tallow. The tallow was very thick oil which was made from the fat of old horses. The pot was called a "grissit." Then the inside of a rush was taken and dipped in the tallow and left to harden. The lamp used was called a "Shliggeh." We have a "grissit" at home. It is rusted now.
