- My father heard his uncle talking about an old hedge-school that was in Killeen. It was held in a shed over where Murphys are living now. It was taught by a man who was known as "Martin the dealer". He used to go around selling things and he used only get a penny a week from each child. He would never give his full name as he was afraid somebody would tell the English. There was supposed to be another school in an old shed in the wood where Farrells are living now. It is not known who taught in it as he was called nothing but "The Hedge-School Master"

- A man named Duffy had a hedge school in Killeen. Every child brought a penny to pay him. In the winter the farmers would give him a shed to teach in. The pens they used in his school were sticks cut out in the shape of pens.
- There were old schools in Tara long ago. The wall are to be seen yet. A man named John Boland taught in one of them. It was a night school for boys up to ten years of age. He used to teach them the Bible and tell them about St. Patrick.
