- There was a man near here who used to rob and murder people long ago and he was called Collier the Robber. He murdered people in a field outside Kilmessan; ever since that it is called the "Rips Col". There was a big dog seen there every night at twelve oclock. This happened about 100 years ago. There is a field in Killeen called "Colliers Field". It was a short-cut for him to go to the "Hangman's Bush" in the Glebe field. He would hide there and rob people going the road. He used to get several sticks and stick them down in the ground, and cover them with soldier's coats and caps. When travellers would see them they would think there were soldiers in the field, then Collier would walk out [in front of the travellers] and pretend he was drilling them.
