    looked round there were fourteen big plates full of dinner. When they had eaten they all went out leaving Paddy behind. Soon St. Peter came back and asked Paddy what gift he would like and Paddy said he would like to be the best card player. Peter said, "Our Lord might not agree to that" and Paddy said he did not want any other gift.
    So Our Lord did consent. Next day Paddy was passing by some house and he heard crying inside and he went in. There was a dying man in one corner and a priest waiting to hear his Confession but the sick man would not go to Confession. In another corner the devil was standing and Paddy asked him what he was doing there and he said he was waiting for the soul. Paddy asked him why he was so sure of the soul and he said he had won it long
