- (continued from previous page)But cease, my muse, I will not carp or quail,
Or entertain you with a plaintive tale;
Of fate or fortune I will not complain,
But I'll recoil and praise the box again,
And its perfections I'll describe and show
To all who like its strange effects to know.
For such a box in any age or clime
Was never known down to the present time;
It shines in darkness like a star by night -
Pandora's box was never half as bright.
And the pure snuff which it contained inside
Surpasses all that e'er was ground or dried.
It frees the good, the gentle and humane
From every ailment, grief and mental pain
But on the bad, a bad effect it takes,
A bad man's nose it almost busts and breaks;
Whene'er he takes this penetrating snuff
His rugged features are convulsed and rough,
His mouth flies open and his roaring nose
Like some old trumpet rudely puffs and blows"
