    Farewell to the ranches, farewell to the grove,
    And the cool shady valley where oft I did rove
    And reigned as a monarch, the long summer through.
    Whilst the wild woods re-echoed my cuckoo, cuckoo.

    But the spot I loved best was the old orchard tree,
    Till cruel marauders took this refuge from me,
    They felled down my hazel
