  2. In olden times oaten, wheaten and indian meal bread were most common. Buttermilk was not very plentiful long ago so they would wet the bread with water. Bread soda was never put in the bread.
    The people were very fond of potato cakes, which were made with flour and mashed potatoes. These cakes were made in an oven. The women used to make as much bread on Saturday as would do them for the week. Sweet bread was only made at Christmas.
