  1. In my house our domestic animals are the dog and the cat, and we have also five cows two horses and nineteen cattle. We have no names for the cows but one of the horses is called Nora and the other one is called Lily. We have about fifty hens and when we call them we say "tioc, tioc." The cows are driven in from the field to the byre every morning and evening to be milked. The byre is a large shed and there is a loft with a slated roof over it. There are a line of mangers along the wall and each cow knows her own manger and she goes into it where she is tied. They are tied with chains which go round their necks and are attached to an iron bar by means of a ring. The ring runs up and down the bar according as the cow moves her head. Our dog is a brown and white collie and his name is Teddy. He is very useful for driving sheep and cattle. The horse's stable is a big shed and there are two big mangers in it. The horses are tied with a rope which goes through the boards of the manger. There is a wooden block tied to the end of the rope, so that the horse cannot pull the rope out from between the boards.
