    boys going home at night had heard the sound of chains dragging after them & some were passed by a soldier on horseback having a drawn sword in his hand. In a while the number of visitors to Jack's had dwindled to just a handful who paid no heed to the rumours which by now had become common gossip. Then three of these were returning home one cold winters night. The avenue to the public road was about half a mile & as the men were going along it they were joined by a fourth as if from nowhere. All three saw the stranger who had joined them, but no one spoke. The stranger accompanied them until they got near the public road, when he vanished as suddenly as he had before appeared. It was twelve o'clock. The three now that they were alone exchanged a few brief words & then made for their respective homes. One of them, Mick was his name, on his way home had
