little of the milk on a spoon which they would taste and would know by that the temperature.
Often times it would be a failure to get butter on the churn. Some people believed that the produce of the milk could be taken away by some witchery. In many cases they applied to a man whose name was Conor Sheridan living somewhere in Dublin to get back their butter. When the people would tell him what was happening he would tell them what to do. The next time they were churning to put a certain iron in the fire and the person that was doing the evil would have to come to the house with some excuse but he was to get no admittance while the churning was in progress.
