The teachers were known as hedge-school masters. In this district the names of the hedge-school masters are still remembered.
The pay of the hedge-school masters was very small and depended on the generosity of the people. It often amounted to only a couple of shillings a week.
The masters were supported and housed in the houses of the pupils. Nor were all the pupils young people. The thirst of the Irish people for knowledge was responsible for grown up and middle aged people being numbered amongst the pupils 0f the hedge-school masters.
Some of these masters were men of superior education and had a competent knowledge of Greek and Latin.(continues on next page)
