The Famine
This district was thickly populated before the famine. There are a good many sites of houses where people lived during the famine. The potatoes were very good before the famine but for a couple of years they did not grow.
The people had to eat grass and water cress. They could not get any stirabout because the English government bought all the oats at a very high price.
The people died in great numbers. They were found on the roadside and buried without coffins.- Collector
