always went on, The men used to make household furniture and carve it, and some of this can be seen in the mantelpieces in some of the houses still. The people were very loyal to each other and in former times there was a saying if you offended one of the Lakenstowns you turned them all against you. The little river at the back of the townsland contains fish, and the young people bathe there in Summer. In summer also the people used assemble at the "cross boreen" and dance and have bonfires and play games. These pastimes are a thing of the past. The few families left live very lonely lives and as soon as the young people are old enough to go to England they are off.
The oldest person in the district does not remember any one who ever spoke Irish. The language is dead about 100 years here.
