  1. The local fairs are held in Longford. They are nearly always held in towns. Buyers often transact business in the country, they go out to the farmers houses and look at cattle, sheep, or horses and make bargains, and buy them just as they would in a fair. This is still done.
Some fairs were held formely which have been discontinued.
Fairs were held in Newtownforbes but are now discontinued because there were hardly any cattle to go to them.
The town fair is held on the streets particularly on the main streets.
Toll is paid, (on cattle sold) to the town council to pay for the cleaning of the streets.
When an animal is sold luck money is given to the buyer. It is called a (Luck Penny).
It is very interesting to watch the buyer and seller making bargains, they shout and shake hands and spit on their hands, and sometimes an onlooker steps in and helps to make the bargain by dividing the difference.
When the cattle are bought they are marked by clipping the hair or by marking them with raddle.
