Long ago it was common for a couple to get married on Shrove Tuesday night and go away secretly. These sort of marriages were called "Runaways". After three or four weeks the friends of the bride would go and bring her home to her own house. They would bring a bottle of whiskey with them.
When the bride and groom would come home to their new house they would hold a party and invite some of the men and women from the neighbourhood. The other young men would dress with women's aprons and straw upon their heads. They would go to the wedding feast and ask for money. These men were called "Ban Beggars" and went in batches of nine or ten.
