“There was an old hedge school in this locality in former times.”
There was an old hedge school in this locality in former times. It was in the townland of Kilrea in a barn owned by the Smiths kindly given for the purpose. He was a master Geraghty that was teaching in it and a large number of pupils were in attendance. He was teaching plain English because at that time there was no Irish. There was no fire kept in the school or no accomodation such as blackboards or desks just a few common plain forms around the walls for the pupils to sit on. Slates were all the time used instead of Exercises or copybooks. Every Monday the pupils had to bring in a small fee to pay the teacher for the week. The master lived a half-mile away from where he was teaching in a nice little cottage of his own and walked to his own place of teaching every morning.- Collector
