- There were two fairs held in olden times one on May Day the second 21st December.As there was no fixed Fair Green the fair was held in any field not under tillage. This gave rise to the surmise that these fairs were established by the Abbot of Dunbrody for the sale or disposal of flocks . Later on the fairs were held at the Cross roads where stood the old Thatched Church of Penal Days when none save the Registered Priest could offer the Holy Sacrifice.
This spot became place of commercial enterprise. Here, too, the local Politicians met and discussed current events . Here too was taught and imbibed that spirit of patriotism which was found in '98.
