Tintern abbey is not very far from here.
It was founded by Earl Marchall in the year 1200. He founded it in fulfillment of a vow when he was in danger of being ship wretched. He vowed that if he reached Ireland safely he would build an Abbey where he would land. He landed in Tintern in the Barony of Shelburne and kept his promise by building Tintern Abbey.
