  1. In Mukrankin some years ago, there lived an old bachelor whose name was James Furlong, and he was called Jemmy Curley. He got that name because he had a long white head of curls. He chiefly made his living making baskets, making spreys and cutting faggots. He dug and burned his own turf on the land now owned by Thomas O Keeffe.
    In the picking time of the potatoes he would sell a lot of baskets and during the winter months he would sell a pounds worth of spreys and perhaps have 10/= for cutting faggots. He woud then go on a spree and give his fellowfriends a merry evening. After the supper he would give them a good drink of porter. After this Curley would be feeling very sleepy and before his friends would say good night, they would have to put Curley to bed, then going out they would close the door and wait until he was fast asleep and then they would get a long briar with plenty of thorns on it. Then they would push the briar through a hole in the window and wind it into Curleys long curls. "Oh God
