- Quite close to Mr. Belvin's cottage lived a small farmer named Frank Cosgrave.
This Frank Cosgrave performed a feat that must be placed in a special niche e.g.
He on one occasion smoked (in one smoke) a pound of tobacco for the wager of one gallon of whiskey. Mr. Belvin says it took place at Brien's of Upton a house outside the village of Kilmuckridge some two miles to the north of Ballyvaldon. Here is how it was done : He procured a tea-pot and broke up and prepared the tobacco. He smoked through the pipe but every alternate 'draw' was 'in' which quickened the consumption of the fill, to a great extent. The same Frank Cosgrave, my informant tells me, carried 40 Stones of Wheat for a length of some twenty yards.(continues on next page)- Informant
