- Potatoes are grown at home. We saw about 1/2 an acre each year.My father + uncle ready's the ground. The ground is not manured before it is turned up. The potatoes are generally sowed in ridges. The spade is used for this purpose. No one ever remembers wooden ploughs. The neighbours help sewing the potatoes by lending their horses for a day.The potatoes are stored in pits. The names of the potatoes are Kerr's Pinks, Shamrocks, British Queens, Irish Queens + Race horse Kidneys.
