Here I lay me down to sleep,
My soul I give to God to keep,
Any spirit come and waken me,
In the bed and I asleep.
I say I saw the Blessed Virgin
    Coming down from heaven,
With a Holy Prayer Book in her hand
    Seven bells ringing,
    Seven priests singing,
    Seven candles lighting,
    Open the gates of heaven,
    Shut the gates of hell,
And all the poor souls in Purgatory,
    Rest in Peace. Amen.

Here I lay me down to rest,
Bless me O' Lord, defend and bless me
This night and during my whole life,
    Amen.

Now is the fast departing night,
Maker of all we ask of thee
Of thy great mercy through the night,
Our Guardians and defence to be,
Far off let idle visions fly,
No phantom of the night molest
    Curb thou our raging enemies
